Hidden away from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok’s streets lies Bungsamran, the most unique and prolific fishing venue in Thailand.
Tom and Francois are both frequent visitors to Bungsamran, catching large carp
catfish and a host of other species. But for their first time fishing Bungsamran's monster Arapaima they decided to team
up to keep the cost's down. They had employed the service's of Bungsamran's No1 Arapiama guide "Mr Badboy".Mr Badboy has helped many anglers on Bungsamran and other venues have the experience of hooking up with
these freshwater goliath's, including specimen's to 185kg and dozens of other 100kg plus specimens.
To be sure of hooking and landing Arapaima, a great deal of planning is required, and this time
was no exception. Mr Badboy prepared several swims day's in advance. This involves making sure the
swim is clear of any unwanted snags, such as underwater bamboo growth, and debris, other anglers lines that have tangled in nearby
structures.
Once this is done, the trap is laid, this is a simple process of dropping a keepnet of livebaits in the water,
and leaving for several days, these in turn get the Arapaima's interested drawing them into the swim. But it's necessary
to prepare 3 or 4 swims, becuase if the first swim only produces a small Arapaima, then it becomes necessary to move
swims, since the Arapaima is territorial.
